What is Carbon Footprint?

The dictionary definition of a carbon footprint is…

“the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities of a particular individual, organisation or community.”

Whilst that provides you with an overview of what it is, it doesn’t tell you why it is important and why you should care about it.

The importance of your Carbon Footprint?

The best way to tackle climate change is to reduce your carbon footprint by taking your everyday carbon emissions into consideration. This means that you can increase or decrease your carbon footprint with your everyday choices.

The ultimate goal is to become ‘Carbon Neutral’, which is where your carbon output is effectively reduced to zero, by offsetting your carbon usage.

Calculating your Carbon Footprint with Cim50

We are planning to include a unique set of new features to Cim50 v2020. This software update will allow you to calculate the Carbon Footprint for your manufactured products.

In order to achieve this, there will be two modes; simple capture and full capture.

Simple Capture Mode

To calculate your carbon footprint in simple capture mode, all you will need is your fuel bills. Tell Cim50 what types of fuel you are using as a business, how much you are using and over what time period. In addition, Cim50 will use that information, along with your production output over the same time period and the carbon footprint of your purchased items as detailed from your suppliers, to calculate the carbon cost for your manufactured items.

Full Capture Mode

To capture the exact carbon costs for your manufactured items, you would use full capture mode. This mode allows you to enter the following information throughout the system. Which, along with the carbon footprint of your purchased items as detailed from your suppliers, will provide you with an accurate carbon cost for your finished goods.

  • Enter fuel usage and type against your production machinery.
  • Enter details of your vehicle fleet, including annual mileage, fuel type and emissions data.
  • Carbon Overheads – enter your business fuel bills (Gas/Electricity etc) into Cim50. The system will then calculate what portion of those bills are overheads based on the production output of your system over that time period.

These values will then be used to calculate the carbon cost when completing a works order or BOM build. With the carbon cost being recorded.

Reporting Carbon Usage

A new dashboard will be added to the software, allowing you to easily see your carbon footprint each month, which products have the highest carbon footprint, what machinery and vehicles are costing you the most. Allowing you to make informed decisions to reduce your carbon footprint.

There will also be numerous reports available throughout the system giving you insight into your carbon usage.

Offset your Carbon Usage with Cim50

You will be able to offset carbon usage by funding carbon offsetting projects or via purchasing renewable energy credits located in the UK and Europe.

You can choose to give your customer the option of offsetting the carbon usage for the items they’re purchasing, or offset it on their behalf and share the good news with them.

In conclusion, to find out more about this feature and how our Cim50 software application aims to fight climate change by reducing your carbon footprint. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
